“This Project is Vital”: Empowering the Local Church in Angola

Students celebrate the opening of the school in 2019. Since then, hundreds of children have been put on a waiting list until the school can increase their capacity for students. Families are eagerly awaiting this construction project.

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
- Colossians 3:17

School and Community Center in Jacare

14 new classrooms will be added to Fulama School and Community Center.

Millions of school-aged children in Angola do not attend school. While education is valued and desired, Angola’s long civil war left the country with very little educational infrastructure. The Anglican Church in Angola has been filling this need by setting up educational institutions with a strong Christian influence, especially in rural regions of Angola. In the Diocese of Divine Hope, Fulama School and Community Center in Jacare (outside the capital city of Luanda) opened in 2019 with 10 classrooms and has been a beacon of hope in the community since. Unfortunately, with so few schools, hundreds of students have remained on waiting lists for years to enroll. By adding 14 additional classrooms, Fulama School will have space to enroll an additional 750 students who have been waiting for a chance to go to school. One father explains the situation this way:

“I am not happy because my son is still on the waiting list. Lack of schools and teachers is worrying as so many children, including mine, cannot get a chance to attend school. We urgently need our Fulama School and Community Center to be expanded. We need teachers and new classrooms so that my son and his friends can eventually get a chance to attend school. Our future lies in this school and we are anxiously waiting for construction to start” – Kinanga de Nascimento, father of three children from Jacare, Angola

In addition to much-need educational opportunities, this expansion will also provide space for offices, washrooms, and meetings so it can more effectively serve as a gathering space for the community. With several additional rooms, the diocese will provide a safe living place for children with nowhere else to go, as many children in the community are homeless. The new construction will provide a home for these children, and the diocese will provide house mothers and fathers. Through providing quality education, the Diocese of Divine Hope is meeting an essential need in its community and is helping rebuild Angola by investing in future generations.

“The project is vital . . . It will empower the local church in Jacare, Angola, and it’s already having an impact in the local community.” – Rev. Sozinho Alves, director of Angola Christian Academy in Luanda

ARDF is honored to support the local church in Angola through this wonderful development project. We are inspired by the way they think holistically about their community, knowing that a building can be used for multiple purposes, and that all is done because of the love and grace of Jesus Christ.
